Onshore and Offshore Contract Consultancy (1986 - Present)

Key Responsibilities / Achievements

  • Established a department to set up and run major navigation systems across the North Sea in the face of established and aggressive competition and a massive clamp-down on offshore safety following the Piper 'A' Disaster.
  • Hired personnel, controlled budgets and reported on the financial status and progress of numerous projects.
  • Brought many and varied projects to successful conclusion on time and within budget.
  • Managed the off-shore routing of major cable laying operations from Japan to Taiwan to Philippines to Hong Kong.
  • Project Manager covering many aspects of offshore construction.
  • Offshore Consultant representing clients' interests, overseeing projects and ensuring that the sub-contractor met contract specifications. Includes offshore oil operations and cable route and lay operations.

Geoteam UK Limited - Survey and Operations Manager (1985 - 1986)

  • Reporting to the Managing Director, attending board meetings in Oslo, customer liaison, hiring of personnel, reporting on the offshore status of projects, quality control.
  • Increased the company profile throughout the oil industry by means of sales visits and introducing customer relationship building initiatives.
  • Gained personal expertise of another specialisation within the oil business.
  • Established a major database for Texaco's offshore sub-sea and positioning data.

Eastside Surveys Limited (Own Company) - Managing Director (1982 - 1984)

  • All aspects of sales and marketing, customer development, financial control, research and development.
  • Obtained recognition and high reputation of the company within the offshore business.
  • Developed a survey instrument, built a working prototype, sold the unit to a company having operational resources to enable further development and marketing.

Oilfield Hydrographic Projects Limited - Director (following internal promotions) (1977 - 1982)

  • Client representative offshore for two major oil companies.
  • Management of several UK offshore operations, personnel and general operational issues.
  • Provided training and operational support to the Spanish and Bombay offices.
  • Customer support, personnel recruitment, research and development, planning.
  • Played a major role in the team that assisted in bringing the Ninian oil field on stream with the positioning of the South Central and North platforms and associated connecting pipelines.

Gardline Surveys Limited - Area Manager (following internal promotions) (1974 - 1976)

  • Established the Aberdeen survey department. Recruited personnel. Sales and marketing. Project management of ongoing offshore operations.

Decca Survey Limited (Now Racal) - Senior Surveyor (1971 - 1974)

  • Management of vessels offshore during shallow seismic surveys.
  • In charge of vessel during site survey and anchor patterns for rigs.
  • Report compilation and chart production.
  • Trained surveyors and engineers.
  • Subsequently managed own projects with a dedicated vessel.

Royal Navy Surveying Service - Senior Surveyor (1960 - 1971)

Key Responsibilities / Achievements

  • Ships charting and stores, survey boats during detached survey operations, survey laboratory and training, maintenance and upkeep of all vessel survey instrumentation.
  • Surveyor / Diver responsible for all diving and associated equipment.
  • Maintained and re-surveyed Europe's and the 'Iron Curtain' countries' wartime beach landing and air strike covers at MOD, London.
  • Member of the team that surveyed the real Atlantis - Iceland to South America.
